Microsoft Windows 12 DLSS will improve video game performance

Microsoft is thinking about using the full potential of artificial intelligence in the next windows 12 download update. A preview showed us a little of what the company is preparing for a new Super Resolution tool integrated into the system, which will use AI to improve the video game image quality. According to a user on Twitter, this function is already being tested in build 26052 in the test version of the operating system. Windows Insider build 26052, available on the Canary and Development channels, includes a feature hidden in the Display options. Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) will be integrated into the Display menu in Windows 12 as an alternative to improve the performance of your games.

“Use AI to make supported games play more smoothly with improved details,” the description mentions in the operating system’s graphics settings. The option includes a generic link to the DirectX development blog and a button to activate it. Auto SR can also be activated in each application individually. With Auto SR, Microsoft joins the offer of climbers based on artificial intelligence. This technology analyzes lower-resolution images and uses motion data and previous frames to reconstruct native-quality images. Currently, NVIDIA is the leader in this field thanks to DLSS, an option that graphics card users activate almost by default.

The difference with NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel is that Microsoft would offer a native scaling solution in Windows 12, although it is unknown if it will be at the level of its competitors.

How to activate Auto SR in Windows 12 to improve your games with AI

Automatic Super Resolution is hidden in the latest Windows 12 Insider build in the Canary and Dev channels (26052). Development versions are recommended for those who have a secondary computer or don’t mind using a version of Windows that may include bugs. If you have no problem with the latter, you can install it from the Windows update menu. Because Auto SR is not enabled by default, you will need ViveTool, a tool that looks for hidden features in Windows Insider builds. Download the latest version (v0.3.3) from GitHub and unzip the contents of the ZIP file to a folder on your computer. Now you just need to launch a CMD or PowerShell window as Administrator and navigate to the ViveTool folder. Once inside, type vivetool /enable /id:47123936and restart the computer. At the moment there is no information about the technology that Windows 12 will use to improve games with artificial intelligence. Microsoft is currently working with Intel to develop a neural processing unit (NPU) to enable machine learning workloads on Windows. The tech giant is also working on its Maia 100 and Cobalt 100 chips to power OpenAI AI in its data centers. This new feature from Microsoft could be considered a native DLSS or FSR, since it offers benefits by being integrated into the operating system. AMD has something similar, Radeon Super Resolution that is integrated into its drivers, but it leaves a lot to be desired.

Expectations for the Windows 12 24H2 update are quite high as several features and functions with artificial intelligence are expected. Its impact is so great that it was even confused with Windows 12. However, although all these developments are positive, they may demand more from our hardware. For example, Microsoft revealed that we will need 16 GB of RAM at least to use Copilot, and newer CPUs may also be recommended for more advanced features.
